Our New Understandings of Growth/Fixed Mindsets

We have been unpacking Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset and doing a lot of learning around them.

We are noticing the language we use out loud and in our own minds.

We discussed the kinds of language you might hear with each mindset. As a class, this is what we came up with...

But remember, mindsets can change, it's up to us!

Ilam School Cultural Day!

All of us took a trip around the globe today, celebrating our unique school and the amazing array of cultures that we have here!
We had a fantastic assembly and were so lucky to watch dances, music and singing by children from different countries.
Children danced from countries such as Afghanistan and India. We listened to songs from the Ukraine played on recorder and the National Anthem of the Phillipines and a Saudi Arabian song were sung also.
Our Cultural Day also included performances by the Ilam School Kapa Haka group, the Pasifika group, our Middle School Choir and a group of professional Japanese drummers!
Our shared lunch was delicious! There were so many different cuisines to try.

Mindball and Mindfulness

Today, as part of our inquiry "Thinking Smart - It's Up To Me!",  Room 3 children experienced 'Mindball' from Science Alive!

Mindball is a game designed to work as a measure of how well a person can be calm and focused. A calm and focused mind will prevent the ball from entering the circle and will end up in the opponent's circle.

The focus of the programme is to introduce concentration techniques. It encourages children to practice mindfulness in their own time. This could be as simple as relaxing, closing your eyes and paying attention to all of the sounds you are hearing in your environment.

Below is a video of Zach and Jack in their states of calm and focus.
