Our great assembly!

Last Thursday we had a fantastic school assembly. Our special guests were Richard from the SPCA and Anneliese from Alzheimer's Canterbury. They were thrilled to be there to receive the incredible amount of money we raised from 'Run a kilometre for charity!" They each received a whopping $4500 from Ilam School kids!  They were very pleasantly surprised! Richard said it was the biggest cheque the SPCA had received!!

We all felt very proud that we had done our bit to give back. The House Captains presented the cheques to the charities and felt very proud they had chosen these two important organisations to support.

We also announced the prize winners from the junior, middle and senior school. These children had raised the most money! After that, they announced the house that had raised the most money. That house was RAKAIA! 

A HUGE well done to EVERYONE at ILAM SCHOOL.

Run a kilometre for charity!

On Thursday of Week 5, we are going to 'run a kilometre for charity!' The Ilam School House Captains have chosen to support the SPCA and Alzheimer's Canterbury!

How can you help?

Get some friends, family, relatives or neighbours to sponsor you to run the kilometre.

Remember to explain what you are going to do to earn the money and who the money is going to.

Give it a go and support these two worthy causes!

Literacy through The Arts!

Rooms 3, 19 and 20 have been collaborating together on literacy through the arts. We have been unpacking poetry through dance and drama and what a way to comprehend figurative language, learn new vocabulary, be creative, and have a lot of fun in the process!

In groups, we have been using space, timing, energy, levels and relationships to create a series of moving scenes, with each one ending in a freeze frame, that represent the poem . We have been working on trying to be creative and figurative in our movements rather than literal to represent the poetry we have been studying.

The most recent poem we have been working on is 'If I Were A Storm...' by Katie Boom.

The poem reads:

If I were a storm,

I would range over farms and plains,

houses, cities and seas.

I would beat against the window panes of houses

with warm fires inside.

I would whip the leaves off trees.

I would flood rivers while I could,

for all too soon, the sun will peep out

from behind a cloud

and I must pick up my black billowing skirts and leave

to whine over the oceans and beyond.

We (the children of Room 3 ) are very proud to announce that in total we made $525.90 from our Sherbet Day and our Senior School Market Day. The following charities are the charities we have selected to donate our money to!

The Christchurch City Mission, Unicef, Red Cross, S.P.C.A, Orana Park and Dogwatch!

Not Just For Profit!

Starting up a business!

The Senior School are having a Market Day at the end of the term. We are donating money to a charity of choice that we have researched. Right now, we are going through the process of starting a business so that we will know what to do for the actual market day.

First, we had to form a company. Some of our company names are: P.O.E.F., Mionionaires For Charity, Extreme Treats, Candymen, Fantastic Fizzers and Sweet Station.

We were given a recipe. We decided on who was doing what role then we made our product -  Sherbet Lollipops! We had to make sure there was "quality control" with our products. This meant making sure all of the products were high quality and looked the same.

Next, each company came up with a price for each Sherbet Lollipop. Prices ranged from $1 to $2.20. We had different reasons for the prices we chose.  The teachers told us that we had to pay the money for the ingredients back. We worked out how much we owed the teachers and then calculated possible profits we could make with different prices. The total amount each group has to pay back is $4.10.

Next, we had to think about marketing our product. We thought to create print adverts to hang around the school, ads on the computer, notify the school through the Daily Details and write large advertisements in chalk on the concrete. Many of us included slogans in our advertising.

The next step is selling our products at Morning Tea on Wednesday the 21st of May.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Room 3 children have been "egg sitting" this week as part of their Keeping Ourselves Safe unit. They'vebeen experiencing how to look after something and keep it safe. Their egg can't be left alone at any time and if they are busy, they need to arrange for someone else to egg sit. There have been a few casualties but more than half the class managed to keep their egg safe for 4 days!

Children took the challenge very seriously and there were some very comfortable little 'egg houses' and beds! These eggs have been well looked after.

T.E.A.M. - Together, Everyone, Achieves, More

TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE 

We've been learning to use team work and work with each other cooperatively. Today we used it to creatively problem solve. We talked about compromising, negotiating, building on each others' ideas and talking, to be able to achieve a result.

Our Challenge!
To build the tallest spaghetti and marshmellow tower that stands on its own for 1 minute. There were teams of 3 and some rules. Take a look at our efforts!

What we found challenging:

- making it stand

- not receiving any help

- the time pressure affecting team work

- sticky fingers!

- pushing the fragile spaghetti sticks into the marshmellows without them breaking

- trying again if our first idea didn't work

- the main base collapsing

- not having enough support in the centre

- people breaking things

- bumping someone holding something and it falling or breaking

- feeling guilty if you were the one in your team who broke it

- being the only one trying and some people mucking around

- feeling tense because of the fast pace and time limit

- lots of big hands creating a little building
